The slapping sound of the helicopter was followed by any loose ground around us being torn up. I clung on to my camera and tightly shut my eyes as mud and stones pelted me from all directions.
As the dust settled, I wiped my face with my hand and peered out of gritty eyes to watch soldiers strap a gun to the helicopter before diving for cover as the machine pulled away from the ground..
… It is safe to say that this week has been more work than working out. A lot more.
That would have really bothered me a year ago (especially two weeks before a half marathon) but I have to be realistic about my job and what my body can take. Exercising after a 13-hour day with troops preparing for Afghanistan would be crazy – especially given the fact my kit weighs 5lb less than what soldiers with ‘heavy loads’ lug around.
I remember my Mum saying to me “sometimes, Claire, all you can do is get up and go to work, then come back and sleep. That’s more than ok”. At the time I stared at her thinking she was crazy but now I fully subscribe to that.
Recently my workouts have decreased, at the same time as my food intake has increased. It’s not easy to watch my body lose definition and gain squidge but I want to grab every opportunity coming my way both professionally and personally.
And that is the long way of telling you that I’m off on a work trip to Berlin next week!
I’m apprehensive, stressed, nervous and going to be reporting on an area I know nothing about but still…
… I’m going to be reporting from one of my favourite cities!
Here’s what else I’ve been up to this week:
I managed to test a few new products this week and have a couple of new favourites to share.
Nut butter from Carley’s – hazelnuts, almonds and brazil nuts. It is definitely a change from my usual PB but tastes great, especially with apple.
Raw Health make some of my favourite products and this date and brazil nut bar is absolutely gorgeous! Sweet, crunchy and juicy. The perfect snack on the go.
There might not look like there is anything new on this plate but I traded my usual balsamic dressing for apple cider vinegar mixed with olive oil. It definitely gives salad a tang!
Erm not much on the workout front this week.
Mon: 8.26 mile run
Weds: 50 minutes cross trainer
Fri: Hopefully a run or yoga
So quickly moving away from that and on to other feats – let’s talk about Mo!
Check out the little white stripe on his belly and his ‘gloved’ hands!
He found a new trick..
… and has developed a real love for hiding in my hair, which is rather adorable.
I’m going to miss him when I’m in Berlin but I’m sure he’ll be well and truly spoilt by my doting sister. I’m leaving strict instructions pictures every moment of the day!
* Where’s the most excited place you’ve worked?
* What do you always forget to pack before going away?
* Any new snack bar recommendations?
I’m going through masses as I’m often too busy to grab anything else
Have a great weekend!
